I'VE FOUND HORACE!
« on: April 28, 2013, 05:12:02 PM »
How did I manage to miss THIS? I am now getting my fix. I've started to catch up from the start of last October, and wonder how much further back this archive goes.

One quibble, there isn't a "next" button, which makes navigation awkward.

You would think that after 20 years of things like monogrammed sherry glasses – the Wild West would be more of the Genteel West.
People will come from strange lands to hear me speak my words of wisdom. They will ask me the secret of life and I will tell them. Then maybe I'll finish off with a song. The Nomad

Can I hear the frantic googling of Peepmaster looking up the phrase "what all"?

Ah - is it a Scottish expression?

No, that was probably me.

(Google didn't help much, by the way.)

Damn. Really? "What all do you need?" It never crossed my mind that this was a Scottish expression.
Let's say a guy walks into a fishing shop and says to the assistant that he's going fishing at the weekend and needs a few things.
"What all do you need?" replies the assistant.
No?

Ha ha. I did Google it, and drew a blank. I suspected it might have been an expression local to Dundee.

Maybe you can do one where the shop assistant asks, "is that you?" That used to intrigue me when I first moved here. :-)

I've just mentioned this to my dear wife---who's a Londoner, as you know, Peeps...and she's perfectly happy with it. Although she did hazard a guess that it might be an American expression!

That's good. I think that if at least two people use the expression in the UK then it's perfectly acceptable.

Congratulations to Mince, by the way, on his new job proof-reading in a stick-of-rock factory.

There's a difference between "what" and "what all", with the second meaning "tell me everything". Try googling: "what all do": you will see enough examples of the usage.

Horace does as well, so that's at least three.

I'm not sure the wild west is actually in the UK.

A walk down Saracen Street in Glasgow may change your mind. (Please just accept this as fact and don't ever try it.)   :o
